Arriving at a new home surrounded by boxes is overwhelming. The key is to focus on what you need to function today, not on making the home look perfect. This checklist works through the priorities in order so you can be comfortable within a few hours of arrival.
Priority 1: Make the Bedroom Functional
Set up at least one bed with bedding before doing anything else. A working bed means you can rest even if the rest of the home is still in boxes. If you have children, set up their sleeping space first.
Priority 2: Set Up the Bathroom
Find the towels, soap, and toilet paper and place them in the bathroom. Confirm that the water is running and the geyser is connected. This is non-negotiable before the first night.
Priority 3: Unpack the Kitchen Essentials
You do not need to organise the full kitchen today. Find the kettle or stove, a few cups, basic cooking items, and the items you packed in the "Use First" box. Set these up on one surface so you can make a basic meal or tea.
Priority 4: Locate All Medicines and Important Documents
Find the medicines bag and place it somewhere visible. Locate the documents folder and put it in a designated, accessible spot.
Priority 5: Connect the Essentials
Plug in the refrigerator (allow it to stand for four hours before switching on if it was transported on its side), connect the internet router if service is active, and confirm the electricity and water are working in every room.
Priority 6: Give Each Room a Box or Pile to Unpack Tomorrow
Place the boxes for each room inside that room. You do not need to unpack them tonight. Just getting them off the main floor clears the space and reduces the visual chaos.
Priority 7: Set Up One Living Space for Tonight
Push two chairs together or set up a single sitting area where the family can relax this evening. A comfortable place to sit and a working television or phone charger makes the first night feel significantly more settled.
Leave This Until Later
- Wall decorations and artwork
- Setting up the spare room
- Organising bookshelves and storage
- Completing the kitchen organisation
- Connecting the washing machine (can wait one or two days)
The goal on the first day is to be comfortable, not to be fully set up. The home will come together over the next week. The priorities above give you everything you need to get through the first night without stress.
