Shifting house at short notice is stressful but manageable if you focus only on what is essential. This checklist cuts out everything that can wait and focuses only on the steps that must happen in the next few days.
Day One: Confirm the Move
- Call at least two packers and movers companies and request an urgent booking; explain the timeline clearly
- Confirm the moving date, time, and price in writing before anything else
- Arrange for someone to be present at the old address and the new address on the moving day
- Notify your landlord or housing society at the old address of the departure date
Immediately: Decide What Moves and What Stays
- Walk through every room and separate must-move items from everything else
- Identify items to leave behind, donate, or discard — do this quickly; every item you remove from the move saves time and money
- Do not wait to declutter perfectly; make fast decisions and move on
Pack in This Order
- Essentials bag first: medicines, documents, phone chargers, two changes of clothes — this bag travels with you personally
- Important documents next: property papers, Aadhaar cards, certificates — pack in a folder and keep with you
- Fragile and valuable items: pack these carefully with whatever padding material is available
- Everything else: use whatever boxes and bags are available; label each one with a single word (Kitchen, Bedroom, Clothes)
Notify the Essentials Only
- Inform your employer of the new address
- Call your bank to update the address record or flag the change
- Transfer or pause your internet, electricity, and gas connection — even a quick call to schedule is enough for now
- Inform the school if you have school-age children
On Moving Day
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, cupboard, and outdoor area before the truck leaves
- Take a photo of every room once it is empty
- Confirm the new address with the driver before the vehicle departs
- Keep the lorry receipt and the contact number of the driver with you
A last-minute shift does not have to be a perfect shift. Focus on moving safely and sorting the details after you are in the new home.
