How to Move a Bed and Mattress Without Damage

A bed is one of the largest items in any home and one of the easiest to damage during shifting if the frame is not properly disassembled and the mattress is not protected before the vehicle leaves.

Step 1: Strip the Bed Completely

Remove all bed linen, pillows, and covers before the move begins. Pack these items in separate bags and do not leave them on the mattress during the move. A mattress being transported with loose items on top is harder to wrap and protect properly, and loose items will fall during loading.

Step 2: Photograph the Assembled Bed Before Disassembly

Take photos from multiple angles — front, sides, and any connection points — before any part of the bed frame is removed. These photos serve as a clear reference for reassembly at the new home and remove any guesswork when the frame needs to be put back together in an unfamiliar room.

Step 3: Disassemble the Bed Frame

Most bed frames can be broken down into a headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats or a base panel. Use the correct tool for each connection type — usually a spanner or screwdriver. Keep all screws, bolts, and fittings together in a labelled zip-lock bag and tape the bag to one of the frame pieces so nothing is separated or lost during transport.

Step 4: Protect the Headboard and Frame Panels

Wrap each panel individually in a moving blanket or thick cloth. Pay close attention to carved or decorative surfaces that can be scratched easily against door frames or other items during the carry. Secure the wrapping with stretch film rather than adhesive tape applied directly to wood or painted surfaces, as tape can lift paint or leave residue when removed at the destination.

Step 5: Cover the Mattress

Use a dedicated mattress bag if one is available — these are inexpensive and widely available online. If a mattress bag is not available, wrap the mattress tightly in thick plastic sheeting and seal the edges with tape. This protects the mattress against moisture, stains, and tears during loading, transit, and unloading.

Step 6: Keep the Mattress Flat During Transport

A mattress should always travel flat, not standing on its side. Standing a mattress upright for more than a short period causes the inner foam or spring materials to shift under their own weight, which can create permanent lumps or depressions that cannot be reversed after delivery.

Step 7: Load the Mattress Last and on Top

The mattress should be the last item placed in the vehicle so it sits on top of the other goods and is not compressed under heavy boxes or furniture during the journey. If the vehicle is a small tempo, confirm there is enough flat floor space before the booking is confirmed — a mattress that is forced to stand on its side during transport is at risk of permanent deformation.

Step 8: Reassemble at the New Home Before Use

Use the photos taken in Step 2 as a guide for putting the frame back together. Check that every bolt and fitting is properly tightened before placing the mattress back on the frame. A frame that is not fully tightened before use is a safety risk and can cause uneven support for the mattress over time.

A bed that is disassembled and protected correctly takes less time to load, travels more safely, and is faster to reassemble at the new home than one that was carried whole without preparation.
